So, it's been awhile since I've written anything. There are a variety of reasons for this. My last article was back in June, before I embarked on a series of travels over the summer that ate into both my gaming and writing time. I'd been a little fatigued on writing and decided that a scheduled break would be good for me. It was. I also got in a bit more gaming than expected, winning a couple of Store Championships and playing plenty of board games with friends. Then as summer ended it was time for me to head back to work. (For those that don't know I am a science teacher) Well, the first part of the school year can be pretty exhausting for teachers and this year was no exception. That also delayed my return to writing.
But really, I think I have just written all that I have to say about Armada. Still love the game, still play it regularly (I just liberated Corellia in a campaign match last week), and still am looking forward to the next batch of releases. But there just isn't much left that I need to write about. If you go back to the start of my own blog, it was really just a place for me to think out loud about Armada. When those thoughts started to slow down, I ended that blog and moved over here with Biggs and Truthiness. I've also handed over the reins on the tournament data projects and I'm sure that Baltanok will do a great job keeping that running. I do think I have a couple of more tactics videos that I would like to produce and hope to get those out later this year. Overall though, I just don't have a lot to say about Armada. Which makes it kinda hard to get much writing done.
So when we started talking about opening up the scope of this blog I felt like I would probably have something to contribute, which led to this new column "Games Shmitty Plays". Originally I was going with Biggs' suggestion of "What on Earth is Shmitty Playing Now?" But that was just more than I wanted to regularly type. I even tried the acronym, but WoEiSPN seemed pretty silly.
So, what will I be writing about? Games. Lots of different games. You see, I like Armada and I'm even pretty good at it, but even when I was full time blogging about it and tracking all the tournament data it was hardly the only game I was playing. I love board games, card games, miniature games, and even RPGs. I play lots of different Star Wars games, but plenty that aren't tied to a particular property too.
Most of the posts for this column will be a combination of review, session report, tactics, and general commentary. In the past couple of months I have managed to play: Armada, X-Wing (Heores of the Aturi Cluster), Mice and Mystics, Shadows of Brimstone, Terraforming Mars, Lord of the Rings LCG, Lord of the Rings SBG, Race for the Galaxy, Imperial Assualt, Star Wars: Rebellion, Dungeon Petz, Mechs vs Minions, Animals Upon Animals, DropZone Commander, DropFleet Commander, and start up a new Star Wars RPG campaign. And I had a great time with all of them. So, I am going to be using this space to talk about some of the random gaming that I get up to and hopefully encourage you all to try out some new things.
But again, this is going to be a space for me to think out loud about gaming. It just won't be limited to Armada.
Although I'm mostly here for Armada, maybe you could branch out to the other Star Wars games?
