Building a Legion Army for Tournament Play - Part 3 (Putting it all together)

Well, after lots of theorizing on the kind of army I want to take to the GenCon tournament in Part 1 and Part 2 of this series I think I have a pretty good idea of the type of army I want to field at GenCon.  Read on to see what I came up with...

Here is what I am going to start testing with.  I am sure it will morph quite a bit based on my games in the next couple of months, but I think this gives me a strong starting point.  I opted not to include Commandos for now.  I want to know more about Snipers and Demolitions before I know if I will want to use them.

Luke Skywalker
  • Jedi Mind Trick, Force Push
Leia Organa
  • Esteemed Leader
2x Rebel Troopers
  • Z-6 Trooper
  • Concussion Grenades
2x Rebel Troopers
  • MPL-57 Ion Trooper
Fleet Troopers
  • Scatter Gun Trooper, Concussion Grenades
2x AT-RT
  • AT-RT Laser Cannon
I am going to go over how I think this army answers the questions that I brought up in my last two posts.

  • 1 or 2 Commanders?  Which Commanders?
As I said in part 2, Luke and Leia make a great tag team.  Having 2 Commanders gives you a ton of flexibility and a nice back up plan should one of them die unexpectedly.  I am a big fan of both Jedi Mind Trick and Force Push on Luke.  With Leia around I am often using Luke to go assault opposing objectives and those are both great to have in the tool box.
  • How many Troops?
I end up with 7 Troops units in this case.  That seems like a solid number, although I am tempted to drop the AT-RTs to go for more.  I may end up doing that in favor of Commandos.
  • Do I bring a T-47?
In this case no.  I could swap the 2 AT-RTs for a T-47, which would be an interesting switch, but not one that makes the army better I think.  If I decide I am hurting for maneuverability I can swap them out.
  • How much Impact do I need?
I ended up with a total of 10 Impact in the army, which is higher than my goal of 9.  While that is good, I do worry about the inefficiency of the Laser Cannons and Ion Troopers against low or no vehicle lists.  One thought there would be to swap to Fleet Troops with Grenade Launchers.  They have Impact 2, but are still useful against Troops with Blast.
  • How much Blast/Sharpshooter can I fit in?
Currently not as much as I want.  I have 3 instances of Blast with the Concussion Grenades.  Leia also has her Pierce/Sharpshooter combo.  The Grenade Launcher would again help here.  I do think the Scattergun/Concussion Grenade combo on the Fleets will be really strong though.
  • How many activations do I want?
I ended up with 9, which seems good.  I could pull off 10 or more by either dropping the AT-RTs to squads or dropping some weapons for more bodies.  I will stick with this for now and see how it plays.
  • Do I want to spam a specific unit type?
Not really, I could reconfigure to get another Corps in there though if this ends up seeming useful.
  • Do I have a plan against Jedi?
Try to wound them a bit at range and then hit them with Luke and his Son of Skywalker command card.
  • How do I counter a Speeder Bike swarm?
I finally did play against one of these and a plan is really needed.  They can pour a ton of firepower on a flank pretty quickly.  The Concussion Grenades are a part of my plan there as removing their cover really helps take them down.  That Fleet Trooper unit in particular has potential.

So, for now I will give this a try.  Once we know a little more about Commandos I will probably proxy some in to see how useful they might be.  Look for a battle report using this army in the near future.  In the meantime, please let me know what you think in the comments.
